Full Version: Courtesy runner

This forum seems a tad moribund so I'll ask a question.

Suppose a batter hits and gets to second base safely, but injures him/herself in the process. Is (s)he entitled to ask to be substituted temporarily for running round the bases, or does this only apply if they are on first? I assume that the opposition must agree. Who can be substitute?

(I've seen different interpretations in action)

Is the rule different if the batter was already injured before play started (I think there is a difference in cricket)?

I assume pinch running - i.e. the base runner is replaced permanently by another - is not permitted.

In the ESL we permit courtesy runners from 1B if a batter has asked beforehand. If the batter gets a great hit and they advance past 1B then they have to carry on. If you are fit enough to run past 1B then you can run all the way round.

If a batter / runner were to get injured ie trips up on the way to 2B, gets hit on the head by a thrown ball etc then we do permit a temporary substitution.

At National Championships though ...
NO courtesy runners permitted and only proper substitutions can occur. If a batter/runner is injured they must be replaced as per the proper rules.

At Tournaments other than Nationals it depends on the TO which of the above they use.
